Maxi Gómez: "I'm very happy about the goals and how the team played."
A player in tremendous form, Maxi Gómez was the gamewinner against FC Barcelona on Matchday 21 of the LaLiga season. The striker had already earned his team victory in the Copa del Rey just four days prior, scoring the only goal against UD Logroñés, and he followed up with another -plus a strike that went in off an opposition defender- against the league leaders on Saturday.
"I'm happy to have helped the team, and we deserved this win," said the Uruguayan after the final whistle. "I hope that they give the first goal to me (instead of it being a Jordi Alba own goal). I'm very happy about the goals and how the team played."
All that came after missing an early penalty, but there was redemption for Gómez with little delay.
"There is a goalkeeper on the other side of the penalty equation, but thankfully I got my revenge in the second half," commented the striker. "Now we have to keep going. We will take things game by game, and hopefully we continue this streak."
Gómez would be substituted before full time, receiving an ovation from the fans, but revealed that he had requested an earlier change.
"I'd asked for the substitution before the second goal, but I was able to score in the meantime. I'm very grateful to the supporters."
"We played very well. In the first half we ran a lot and closed every space. The work from my teammates was fundamental in the win. I'm very happy to provide goals, and it's what a number 9 is always looking to do. I like fighting and helping the team, and it's all the better if the goals come from that."
"We had two games that weren't good, but this team have that grit, fight and winning spirit that makes us so competitive," added Gómez, who believes the team are back on track.
"Thanks to the fans for their support. They are the twelfth man and I hope they continue coming along and supporting us -and enjoying themselves. I hope we carry on like this at Mestalla and away from home."
